Anyone who has watched Tom Platz in the documentary about Arnold Schwarzenegger called the comeback will know what I mean when I say that simply listening to Platz talk about body building with such passion made you want to train to the max right there and then. The man was so enthusiastic, intelligent and energetic about his dream of becoming the best that he could be that it took your breath away. In fact I think it is fair to say that if there was a prize for putting your heart and soul to into achieving a dream Tom Platz would win every time.
I have always believed that if you have a dream or ambition you should give it everything you have and Platz is the perfect example of this philosophy. We are talking about a guy who arrived in California with only $50.00 and a dream to train with the champions and become like them. Only a couple of years later and the Golden eagle as his fans affectionately call him was famous throughout the sport for his phenomenal leg development built through years of the most intensive training ever known and he was seen by everybody as the man who symbolised commitment.
Although Tom never won body buildings biggest prize he did get the chance to compete against his heroes in the Mr Olympia contest for a number of years and he also achieved his ambition of becoming a professional body builder. That in itself is something to be very proud of but I think his finest achievement was that his passion was so infectious it gave many others the confidence to aim for there goals in life weather they were sports related or not.
Remember winning is not just about titles, medals or trophies but is more about giving 100% to the goals you have set yourself. If you do that you have already won regardless of where you finished in the race or competition. Platz is the perfect example of this because although he didn’t win his sports biggest prize he gave everything he could to achieve that aim and that is why he will always be a winner.
