For example, a person with an ectomorph body type (Someone who is slim and finds it hard to gain weight) should both train and eat completely different to a person with an endomorph body type (Someone who has a large frame and gains muscle and fat easily) even if they both have the same muscle building goal.

What’s wrong with books and DVDs?
In principal books and DVDs are fine and can increase the knowledge of anyone who uses them. However, they do have one big flaw and that is that they are generic and therefore do not take into account all the complex characteristics that make someone unique. For example, although the boxers Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton both had the same goal when they fought each other i.e. to become the best light welterweight boxer in the world, the training both fighters had to undergo in the months leading up to the fight was completely different.
To compete at light welterweight Manny Pacquiao had to gain weight and fight at a far heavier weight than his natural build allows. He therefore included a demanding program of weight training and a diet of the high calorie, high protein foods needed for weight gain.
On the other hand Ricky Hatton had gained a considerable amount of weight during his lay off and therefore had to lose over two stone of fat during his fight build up. To achieve this he placed far less emphasis on weight training concentrating more on cardio vascular exercises and a diet bordering on the fanatical. From this example alone it becomes obvious that even with the same goal no two people are the same and can not follow the same path which makes personal training essential.
